On Saturday 25th May Douglas Alexander kicked off his campaign to become the next MP for the Lothian East constituency with a campaign stall in Haddington.

In remarks to local people and Scottish Labour activists, Mr Alexander set out his determination to win back the seat for Scottish Labour:

“For many months we’ve been campaigning across the County and finally the Prime Minister has now called the General Election.

“In the coming weeks we’ll be out and about across the whole of the constituency making the case for ending the Tories’ economic chaos and delivering economic growth, more investment for our key public services and a new publicly-owned energy company, GB Energy, based here in Scotland.

“Scottish Labour’s campaign to win in East Lothian will centre on our plan to deliver a decade of national renewal following 14 years of decline under the Conservative Party. It’s time for change. It’s time for Labour.”

Keir Starmer, Leader of the Labour Party, said:

“This is a chance to change East Lothian with Labour.

“Over the course of the last four years, we have changed the Labour Party and returned it once more to the service of working people.

“All we ask now, humbly, is to do exactly the same for our country. And return Britain to the service of working people. A vote for Labour is a vote for economic and political stability, an end to Conservative chaos, and a long-term plan to rebuild Britain.”
